A recruiter asking for social security number before an interview or written offer has given you a reason to pause. In the reports we review, recruiters schedule calls, present roles, and submit resumes without a full SSN. The need for a full SSN comes later, inside a background check or tax form you start on the employer's portal.

What the request looks like in real reports

In the reports we review, the SSN ask usually arrives after a compressed process. A stranger sends a LinkedIn message about a remote role, moves the conversation to WhatsApp or text, and asks for the full number before any live interview. The message usually says the hiring manager needs it for a "pre-check" or to "lock in your file."

One candidate sent us a LinkedIn profile with a recruiter title at a staffing firm. The profile asked for a social security number after a single text conversation. The name was not on the firm's verified recruiter roster. The candidate did not send it.

Check the recruiter before you send anything

If the company has verified its recruiters, it publishes a roster you can search. Type the name from the LinkedIn profile into that roster. If the profile is not listed, do not send your SSN or any document that contains it.

Check the contact path next. Compare the email domain to the domain listed on the verified roster. In the scams we review, the contact path is usually a free address or a domain that is one letter off. If the request arrives through text or WhatsApp, move it back to the company's published channels.

When your SSN is actually collected

In the legitimate processes we see, the full SSN is collected after an offer moves into a background check or tax form. That collection runs through the employer's portal, not through a recruiter's personal inbox. If a recruiter asks for the number directly before that point, treat the message as unverified until the roster check says otherwise.

If the check cannot find the recruiter, do not hand over the number. The cost of waiting is small. The cost of sending it is not.
